Tisa Bryant makes work that often traverses the boundaries of genre, culture and history, with an enduring fascination with fusing critical and creative writing through the other arts into distinctive registers and new forms. She is the author of Unexplained Presence, a collection of fiction-essays that remix narratives of black presences in film, literature and visual art; co-editor and publisher of the cross-referenced journal of narrative and storytelling possibility, The Encyclopedia Project, and co-editor of War Diaries, an anthology on black gay men’s desire and survival. A member of the Dark Room Collective, she recently participated in a reunion tour celebrating the 25th anniversary of their nationally-renown African diasporic reading series and arts exhibition. Bryant’s novel of missing persons and the Black cinematic, The Curator, is forthcoming, as well as Abeyance, a long-form hybrid work about grief, romance, writing and archival research. Her recent participation in a film and writing series, MY ATLAS, about women and travel, spawned a long essay, Tracking Dust, on the absence and promise of Black women and travel in film. Her writing has recently appeared or is forthcoming in Animal Shelter, Black Clock, Jacket2, Mandorla, Reanimation Library's Word Processor Series, What I Say, Viz, and in catalogs for visual artists Laylah Ali, Jaime Cortez, Wura-Natasha Ogunji, Cauleen Smith and Suné Woods. She teaches fiction, African diasporic literature and hybrid forms in the MFA Creative Writing Program at the California Institute of the Arts, and lives in Los Angeles.
